Board of Registration for Professional Geologists
ASBOG Examination

The ASBOG exam is a standardized test developed by the National Association of State Boards of Geology. Currently, it consists of two multiple choice sections each four hours in length: The Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and the Principles and Practice of Geology (PG).

The FG (Fundamentals) exam can be taken upon achieving the required number of credit hours in geological course work. For Kentucky that is 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. To apply for registration, an applicant must submit a completed application for geologist-in-training, copy of their official transcript [if the individual is a student, verification from the university indicating that he/she is a geology major (must be included with the application)], a $50 application fee and a $175 exam fee.

The PG (Practice) exam can be taken upon achieving the required number of years of work experience. For Kentucky that is five years of experience in professional geological work. The applicant must submit a completed application for professional geologist, copy of official transcript, reference letter(s), documentation of any related work experience, a $50 application fee and a $225 exam fee.

Applications are available on the Applications and Forms Web page. When submitting the application, be sure all required information is provided (i.e. transcripts documenting geology course work, reference letter(s), documentation of any related work experience and fees).

All checks should be made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer.
